"The City" - Identity & Place

This is a blog for our first brief that has been given to us by our university. The brief is called "The City" so that means its has to be about Liverpool. Within the brief there is five themes. I picked Identity & Place. I picked this theme because there is allot that you can identify Liverpool by. I also picked it because most people will go with the obvouis and choose architecture. I have allot of exciting ideas and can't wait to produce.

Final Idea

This is my design for my final idea. I have taken parts from the Liverpool and Merseyside coat of arms. I have also tried adding my own style. I have used the arms in my design to try and make a funny side to it and not make it look serious. I have also used like a swirly pattern to represent the River Mersey. also in my design in the shield I have put the UK flag because it is part of the United Kingdom and the Liver Bird in the middle. I used bright colours because I wanted my design to stand out and be eye catching. On the banner at the bottom I have took the motto of the Merseyside coat of arms. it would of been better if I tried making my own motto.
I have used watercolours and black fine liner pen. The size is approximately A2.
 Ideas

This is one of my designs for my ideas. I looked at coat of arms that I liked then adapted the certain parts that I liked into my design and then took the main parts like the liver bird and motto and put it on my design. Also I tried putting my own style on top like the bottom bit which was meant to be referring to water.
I have just drawn the design using pencil then went over it with black fine liner pen. The size is about A5
 Printing Ideas

To make my ideas more exciting I decided to use cardboard and foam to make a print, I made the backgrounds like the badge, queens crown and the banner, so I could create my own designs and add them. I only used red, blue and yellow because I wanted to use bright and enthusiastic colours. Over the print I was going to just go over it with a black marker or black fine liner pen. I am going to do different experimentation to see which one works the best.
There is two more designs and the print
displayed on my studio wall.

 Picture Frames

As part of my idea I wanted a way I could present my final piece so experimented with picture frames. I chose a picture frame because coat of arms are kept as memorabilia which would be displayed in a frame.

I tried making my own style of frame using paper mache but I don't think it worked as well as I thought it would.
I also tried drawing on the glass to make my design but couldn't get the design write.
The frame also took all the attention of my design which was my main idea.

 Website

When I was researching Coat of Arms I came across this website were you can create your own design. There was only certain pictures, colours and font that you could pick from. I had a go an thought it would be useful for my research. The website is more for children to understand coat of arms and I think its part of there education.
For my design I chose different things and I liked the final outcome.
