Printing Workshop
On the 2nd and 9th of December we had a printing workshop. On the fisrt workshop we were shown everything about printing and how to use the machines and the wright equipment. Then we were told that on the next workshop that we would be getting involved and we would be doing etching. We were shown examples of other peoples work and I found it inspiring. we were given a metal tile to take home and etch our own design into it and have it ready for next thursday.
For my design on the tile I done a drawing of The Bombed Out Church (St Lukes). I took the drawing from a photograph that I had taken. I used The Bomed Out Church as my design so I could use the prints as part of my work. I etched the design onto the metal using a screw and a carving tool. it was difficult to draw the design onto the metal tile because it wouldn't go the way you wanted it to. Also I didn't like the noise or feel when I was scrathing my design on to the tile.
When we started our second workshop we started it straight away and were told to file down the sides and corners of the tile so it couldn't damadge the fabric on the printing machine. After that we were told to put gloves on to keep our hands clean and prevent any stains of some sort on our hands. Once we put our gloves on we had to take our tiles over to a hot plate to apply the black printing ink. Then we had to get a peice of fabric like mesh to wipe the ink of the tile, but when we were doing it we had to go in a circular motion so that we weren't getting all of the ink off and making shore it got in the small parts. After that I took a piece of tissue paper and wiped it off were I didn't want the ink to be and were I wanted the effect to be.
At first I done about four plain prints to get used to the process and compare them. When I was satisfied with my design and how it looked I decided to try and use colored paper and other types of paper. They worked quite well over paper because it makes certain things stand out. I also had my design from Adobe Photoshop and it was the write size as the tile so I decided to print on to it to see what it looked like.
I really enjoyed the printing workshop and would do it again.
